JANUARY 1998 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hi everyone!
I hope you and your families had a happy and prosperous holiday season.

Sorry I was unable to make it to our last meeting, but I was in Albany seeing David Copperfield.  I wish I could have been in two places at the same time.  I heard that the auction was a lot of fun.  I would like to thank everyone who helped in my absence.

At our next meeting, we will have the pleasure of having Bob Gibbons as our lecturer.  Bob is the Publisher of "Laugh Makers Magazine" and the owner of Fun Technicians (a magic mail order company).  Bob will be doing a kids show lecture along with having many items for sale.  For those of you who do not know Bob, he is a Great Person and a Premier kid show lecturer.  Do
not miss this lecture if you do kid shows!

See you at the meeting.

May All Your Days Be Circus Days!

Steven Reichel, President SAM #35, Poughkeepsie, NY

February 10, 1998 Meeting

Open session 7-7:30 Arrive early to share ideas, show off new tricks, or just socialize.

Program

Lecture on mental card magic by member Harvey Berg.   Harvey's professional background includes being an Architect and Civil Engineer at Harvey Allen Berg & Associates, and is also an Associate Professor at Orange County Community College.  Harvey claims to be only an "amateur" magician for the past 10 years, however his card work would impress the most accomplished close up professional.

The lecture will focus on Harvey's unique mental effects with cards that have baffled many magicians, which he started to develop about 2-1/2 years ago.  This is the first time he will be exposing his secrets.  The lecture will feature 21 effects that do not depend upon sleights, which anyone can do, with some of them requiring practice and/or preparation.  (Lecture notes will be available after the program)

President's Message

Hi everyone!
What a turn out at our last meeting!  I thought Bob's lecture was very interesting, easy, easy stuff!  Yet great for kid shows.  I would have enjoyed Bob talking more about the business of kid shows, but I think everyone enjoyed the lecture nevertheless.  I am not positive about the number, but I think we had about five or six new members join the club at the meeting. Welcome to our family!

I am sad to say (really I am ecstatic) the January meeting will be my last for a while.   My wife and I are going back to the circus.  The show starts on February 2, 1998 in a town just outside of Houston Texas.  The show is called "Valentine's Mighty American Circus." It tours for nine months and mainly travels in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma.  We had less than two weeks to get our lives in order. AHHHHH!  I know the club is in good hands and I hope we keep the enthusiasm going. I will keep in touch through the newsletter.

March (Newletter Editor's) President's Message

Greetings!
While President Steven Reichel is on the road with the circus, we will have several officers filling in for him.  Next month V.P. Don Deich will host the "notes" column.

Last month's meeting showcased another assembly talent, Harvey Berg.  Harvey demonstrated several card miracles that floored all and left everyone scratching their heads for an explanation.  After Harvey explained the principles of his effects, we were all taken back by his ingenuity.

Hope to see you all at the next meeting.

Steve Johnson, editor

NOTES FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT

Greetings brethren,
At our last meeting we were treated to the fruits of Joe Quitoni's labor, a lecture on Al Baker.  This was well constructed and extremely entertaining, we can only hope that others follow this lead and research the namesakes of their assemblies.  I know Joe wants to polish up this lecture some more.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his work (I don't think the lecture needs any polishing).  My favorite parts were the personal experiences and stories about Al Baker.  The Bob Reinhart video interview was very cool.  It's great to have an archive of people that have made an impact on our assembly.  We are also trying to work out a date to have Harvey return and teach a trick or two from his lecture.  The hope is that by the end of the night all will have a new effect to play with.  Remember that the meeting is not complete without all attending, so hope to see you.

Don Deich, Vice-President

1998-1999 Officers to be announced
It's that time of year when we start planning for next year.  The nominating committee will announce the candidates for the executive committee at the April meeting.

MAGICAL VISITS
John Treyz suggests members visit our long time Assembly member Robert Reinhardt at his current residence, the Blue Haven Adult Home, 121 Stein Road in Pine Bush, NY. (6 miles west of the Pine Bush traffic light.) Bob is lively and cheerful, though suffering from short term memory loss.  For those of you who don't know Bob, he has been a performer, writer for Variety, and a booking agent - to name a few of his many life time accomplishments.  His  old New York stories will amuse you and his magic will fool you.  Bob is available for visits every day before noon and after 2pm.

NOTES FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT

Notes from the Vice-President

Greetings brethren,
Our last meeting was attended by several guests.  It's always nice to have fresh blood (let's keep up the good work by spreading the word about our assembly). When we last met, we discussed the uses for the well known utility device the thumb tip.  As we found out, it doesn't have to stay on your thumb.  It was great to see many of the members taking part in this sharing experience. Thanks go out to Steve for supplying most of us with tips (and tiny notes that fit in the tips).  We were shown unique ways of vanishing, switching and producing items - all this from an appendage that fits in your pocket.    Our next meeting will feature a lecture by Ron Frost. While the name might not be immediately familiar, I can almost be certain that you have or have owned at least one item he has created . The only way not to miss out on this is to be there, I'm sure there will be something for everyone.  Until the sun sets again.

Yours In Spirit,

Vlad Deich, Vice-President

Money for fun
1999 Entertainment Books (2 for 1 dinners, discounts at movies, cleaners, etc.) are now available and are being sold by the club as a fund raiser.  The money we raised last year paid for all mailing and copying costs (about $200.00), and we hope to do the same this year.  The books are effective upon purchase and extend through December 1999 (approximately 16 months). They will be available at the September 8th meeting and are priced at $25.00. To reserve your book or if you would like a book sooner,  please give Wally Libenson a call at 462-6243.

Mmm-mmm good!
A big Thank You to Kim Baltz for providing refreshments at our May
meeting.  This helped promote camaraderie during the break of Ron Frost's
lecture.

On the road (for awhile)
We recently received word from past President Steven Reichel and family.
They are touring with Valentine's Mighty American Circus until the end of
October.  Their travels to date have taken them to Texas, Louisiana,
Arkansas and Kansas.

Notes from the President
This year promises to be a great year for magic in our assembly.  I hope to see most of  the members showing their talents and sharing their love of magic with their compeers.  I personally have learned most from my friends in magic, and have always shared the enthusiasm of our own members at club meetings.  I know I have some pet secrets I'd be glad to share with our members.  I bet you have the same.  Not all of us are star performers, but I'll bet we can all help each other be better magicians with helpful hints and constructive criticism.  In October I hope to have some "show and tell".

See you soon,
Lew Neporent, President

Last Month
Past National President Craig Dickson presented his lecture "For the Entertainer Lecture II" filled with fun effects requiring minimal skill and practice.  He opened with a salt pour and elaborated on several ideas for presenting this effect.   Craig demonstrated several other routines including card to wallet, center tear torn & restored bill, effects with
a reel, rising cards with elastic loop, and a memorized deck routine that fooled everyone.

Craig also mentioned that performers that want to practice new effects and routines would find a receptive audience on the "heartbreak circuit" (hospitals, retirement homes, etc.)  While these jobs pay little or nothing, they allow you the opportunity of getting valuable feedback while giving something back at the same time.

To organize your auction wares, see the form below.

The space below has been provided to help you organize the items you wish
to sell at the December auction.  Please make a copy to give to the
auctioneer when submitting your items.  Thanks!
