Message from the President

Greetings fellow Magi,

I hope all of you had a great holiday and welcome to 2008. I am planning a great
new year of fun and magic for all of us. By the time you get this our annual
"Cavalcade Of Magic" will have taken place and I hope that all of you got a chance
to come out and support the show. Our next meeting will be our annual magic flea
market and auction. We will start out the night by having everyone selling their used
or unused items on a one on one basis. Then at the end of the night we will switch
it up to an auction to try to sell as much as we can. So, bring some of that magic
stuff that has been collecting dust or that old prop that you just don't want anymore.
One man's junk is another man's treasure. Also, make sure you bring some cash
or your check book so you can take home a new toy for your show.

On a more serious note, I was informed that we are no longer going to be able to
use the Central Hudson building for our club meetings. Apparently the company is
increasing security measures and eliminating all out rentals of the building. This
unfortunately means us, so we must look for a new meeting place. I have some
feelers out already but if anyone knows of a place that might be good we will
discuss this at the next meeting. Please bring in any contact info if you have a
place that is interested. We will offer them the same deal that we gave Central
Hudson, we will do one show a year fro them in return for the use of the space for
2 hours once a month.

So, I hope to see you all at the show and at the next meeting for our last one.
This is not an end but a new beginning, so please stay with us as we will find a
new and better place to hold our monthly get together.

Until anon,
John 'El Presidente" Shaw

Message from the Secretary
-------------------------------------------------------

It is with great sadness that I report the death of a Bernie (Bernice) Fitchett,
Bernie was the wife of founding member, Ed Fitchett and a great friend of our
assembly.

In the early days of the assembly, we met at Fitchett Brothers Dairy.
Ed and Bernie were great hosts and food and drink were always a part of the
meetings. Bernie was a great cook and had published a popular cookbook.
Ads for Fitchetts Dairy always included at least a couple of Bernie's wonderful
recipes. We always looked forward to Bernie's incredible desserts at these
meetings.

Our membership will always remember Bernie's ever present smile and
generous spirit. The entire membership of Al Baker Assembly 35 sends its
deepest sympathy to Ed and his family at this difficult time.

Message from the President

Greetings fellow Magi,

Well, as some of you may or may not know we are no longer going to be meeting at
the Central Hudson building any longer. We will now be meeting at the Milanese in
Poughkeepsie, The Milanese Italian Restaurant. It is with great appreciation that I
thank the owners and our own member Santino for donating the room for us to meet
so that we may continue our meetings. So, now if you want to come early or get a
drink of your favorite beverage during the night you will have that option.

This months meeting will be about your favorite effect. So, bring in your favorite
effect no matter what it is. It can be a card trick, a prediction trick, an illusion, etc....
I hope this will get all your creative juices flowing and get as many people out this
month to perform for each other.

On a personal note, I just wanted to let everyone know that both Derrin and I will be
performing on April 5th 2008 at 4PM at the New Fairfield High School in
New Fairfield, CT. This is a fund raiser for the Lion's Club in CT that is headed up
by our own Marty Steinberg. The show should prove to be a lot of fun for the whole
family. I am sure that Derrin will be his usual creative self and I will be performing a
lot of illusion both old and some new.

I will also be performing on April 12th in Highland, NY at the Highland High School
at 7PM for the Highland Fire Department. This will also be an hour long magic and
illusion show for the whole family.

Well, that is all for now, I am getting ready for my trip to Las Vegas next month and
I will report on that after I get back, so in the mean time be well and be safe and
keep the magic alive.

Until Anon,

Greetings fellow Magi,

Due to some technical difficulties with computers the news letter did not go out as planned. We are still going to hold the meeting tomorrow night (3/11/08) at 7:30PM at The Milanese in Poughkeepsie. The theme of the evening will be your favorite effect to perform and share if you wish.

I am asking all of you to send this to everyone you know in the magic club so that we can get this out ASAP. I will try to have the computer problem fixed so that next month this will not happen again.

*** David Groves Lecture ***

Hosted by: John Shaw

Message from the President

Greetings fellow Magi,

Well, things have been crazy for me for the past few weeks. I was in Las Vegas for the Transworld Halloween Convention last week where I ran into friends, Jeff McBride, Amazing Jonathan, Todd Robbins, Apollo Robbins, Teller, Big Kahuna. I had a great time, went to some amazing get together's and hung out with Chris Barnes, the illusion builder for Criss Angel, Steve Wyrick. I have lots to talk about but I will save that for the meeting.

So, I have a nice surprise for everyone, we will be hosting a special last minute lecture this month by a guest magician from Los Angeles. His name is David Groves and I think you will all get something out of this event. I hope to see you all at the meeting and make sure you come ready to have fun and enjoy David's lecture. He will have some great products for sale so bring your wallet and buy some new magic.

Until anon,
John "El Presidente" Shaw

Bio: David Groves

In August, 1998, David burst onto the magic scene with his 8-page spread in Magic magazine titled, Street Magic. That was the first public mention of his little-known lecture notes, Be a Street Magician. The article was so popular that David re-published the lecture notes in a gorgeous book format in December, 1998, titled, Be a Street Magician: A How-To Guide

In January, 2005, David made another big splash with the publication of his article, Magical Vanuatu, an 8-page article in Genii magazine. It is about a trip that he took to the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, 800 miles west of Fiji, where he pursued eyewitness accounts of real magic. In addition, he performed magic for the indigenous tribes. These audiences were people who walk around bare chested, where there is no electricity or indoor plumbing, and where all the natives believe that magic is real. An abbreviated version of the article was also published in the New York Daily News (circulation 840,000, copy available upon request) on Halloween, October 31, 2004.

David has been a full-time magician since 1990. He appears several times a year at the world-famous the Magic Castle in Hollywood. In addition, from 1995 1999, he appeared regularly on Amtrak's Coast Starlight run (Los Angeles to Seattle), a gig consisting of four solid days of magic performance. In four years, he logged 65 four-day trips, until it ended in 1999.

In the mid 90's, David performed for three years on the street, polishing the act that he eventually took to the Magic Castle. In 2003, he started his own weekly magic cabaret, Magic in the 'Burbs, for which he was co host and weekly performer for two years. David's current specialties are standup-comedy magic and close up, although in the early 90's, he performed 200+ kids birthday-party shows per year.

*** David London Lecture ***

Hosted by: John Shaw

Message from the President

Greetings Fellow Magi,

Well, as I write this email I am sitting in my hotel room in Tucson, Arizona and it is 1:30AM. I have just completed 21 of 33 shows and I am also preparing to continue onto California for another 15 shows after this. This month we will be having another guest lecturer. His name is David London and I met him at the NEMCON convention this year. He has a very unusual way of performing and his presentations are very unique. I am sure that this will be a lecture not to miss as David is very interesting and has a lot of fresh ideas on all facets of magic. So, make sure you come out and support the club and this unique event. I hope to see you all there and I will fill you all in on the month long run of shows that I have been doing.

Until anon,

John "El Presidente" Shaw

David London Lecture
David London is not a magician well, he is a magician, but he is also a performance artist, an artist and a filmmaker. Such a unique combination has continuously produced work that captures the imagination and blurs the line between fantasy and reality. David's performances are an original blend of magical moments and offbeat humor designed to simultaneously enhance and shatter the audiences perception.

In David's lecture he will demonstrate, in a magical way, how to think outside the box literally. Next, David moves into some of his original card ideas and handling's. David will then share some ideas based in mentalism, that are entertaining, funny and amazing. All of this and much more, plus David will take you behind the scenes to show you see how he has pieced together his entire act, developed his character, and offer insight into his creative process.

As the creator of four theatrical productions, Cerebral Sorcery, Art of Dreams, The Adventure to the Imagi Nation, and (insert title here), as well as the editor of Beyond The Smoke and Mirrors, David has developed a perspective on magic that is entirely his own. His material has been experienced at MINDvention, NEMCON, The ICBM Gathering, Magic Chicago, The Comedy & Mystery Society, as well as museums and theaters nationwide. He is also the only person ever to go out on the Double D Lecture Tour, twice. Once opening for Arthur Trace, and most recently opening for Rick Maue.

Don't miss the opportunity to see David London shares his tricks, ideas and thoughts. It is guaranteed to be unlike anything you have seen before in magic or anywhere else!

Quotes

"A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men (and their audiences). David London is truly the Willy Wonka of magic. His lecture will show you how to make your daydreaming into the most amazing magic." Aaron Delong, Double D Tour

During a journey through the magical world of David London, you will encounter theatrics, intelligence, and an engaging on-stage persona. Simply put, it is a voyage that is not only entertaining, but well worth exploring! -- Rick Maue, Deceptions Unlimited

"In an event filled with some of the best and brightest performers in the country, David London stood out from the pack. His unique vision, engaging persona and wonderfully creative material, ensures an unforgettable evening."Danny Archer, Mindvention

Message from the President  (June 3rd)

Greetings fellow Magi,

Well, I just got back from Las Vegas where I performed for 5000 people. It was a fantastic show, along with me Cirque Du Solei also performed. This month the meeting will be focusing on the banquet that we have been talking about. We will be discussing the types of acts, the type of food, the location, and the date that will work for everyone. So, if you have any ideas or input at all I suggest that you please come and make your voice heard. This will be the meeting that determines the outcome of this event. This meeting will also be open to a works in progress or new routine performances section. Anyone working on new material or trying to work out something please bring it in and perform it for the group and see if our fellow magi can make it better with constructive criticism. I hope to see you all there and be ready for a great night of magic and making the banquet great.

ANIMAL MAGIC

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

7:30 PM

Milanese Italian Restaurant
115 Main Street
Poughkeepsie, NY

Hosted by: John Shaw

Message from the President  (June 29th)

Greetings fellow Magi,

Well, I hope that everyone is having a great summer and that it has been filled with magic and fun. Last month we spoke about the idea of having a banquet again. Some members were supportive and some are still on the fence. When we meet again we will discuss this some more and go over new details that have come up. I just spoke with Eric Decamps and he is very excited about coming back to our club to do a lecture. For those of you who are not familiar with his work just look him up on line and you will see why he is one of the best close up workers in the business.

I have been thinking about what to do for this months meeting and I think that I have something that will be fun for all of us. A lot of magicians use an assistant for their shows that do not wear skimpy outfits. I am referring to our close little friends...ANIMALS. That is right boys and girls, this months theme will be ANIMAL MAGIC. So, please bring in your favorite effects that use your animals. You can do as many as you like or feel free to bring in something that you are having trouble with so we can work on it. The gauntlet has been thrown and I hope that many of you will rise to the challenge and participate in this night of fun. If you don't use any live animals feel free to bring anything that is even animal themed or uses fake ones as well.

Just another note, I have secured Nathan Kranzo for our September meeting. He should prove to be a great lecture and a really good time. I unfortunately will not be at this meeting as I will be at The Magic Castle that night. I am performing on the West coast the first 2 weeks of September and I will be at the Castle that night visiting with Max Maven and some other magic friends. I will be sure to fill you all in on all the fun I have while there.

Summer get together

Pot Luck BBQ

Poughkeepsie, NY 12533

Message from the President  (June 29th)

Greetings fellow Magi,

Well, I hope that all of you are having a great summer and enjoying the warm weather. I have been out and about doing shows around the country. I just returned from Indiana where I was performing in a show called Xtremely Amped. This is a motor cross stunt show that I host and also perform in. It is filled with motorcycle stunts and jumps along with live music and me doing fire breathing and comedy bits throughout the show.

Last month we met and discussed more about the idea of the banquet. We are still looking for a good venue and are narrowing down the search. This month I have decided along with Joel to have an end of the summer get together/BBQ. So on August 31st 2008 we will be having a little fun with each other and enjoying some food.

We will be meeting at Joel's house and the day will be filled with some fun. The club is going to foot the bill for hotdog's & hamburgers and stuff but we are asking that everyone bring at least one thing with them. This can be a side dish, appetizer, chips, dip, desert, etc. You can of course bring your significant others and/or your family. The day will begin at 1PM and go until whenever. I also request that each member bring an effect to perform for our friends and families who will be in attendance. So, mark this on your calendars and plan to have a great day with fellow members and our families.

Until Anon,
John "El Presidente" Shaw

Greetings Fellow Magi,

Well, I have returned from my run of 24 shows in California and I must say I am happy to be back. The drivers in LA are just out of their mind. While I was out there I witnessed one very bad car wreck and a robbery. I also stayed at the Magic Castle and spent some time at Disney and Universal Studios. I will give all the details of my Magic Castle experience at the meeting.

This month also marks the beginning of my haunted house shows at The Headless Horseman (www.headlesshorseman.com) This month, as it is October, I think it would only be fitting to have a night dedicated to Halloween magic. So bring in your favorite pieces and perform them.

This month we will also be holding elections for new officers, so if you want to be an officer or nominate please make sure that you show up for this one as it will be your only chance to vote. I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting and to electing the new officers.

PS: This month dues are to be collected. So, make sure you bring in $25 and see Joel.

Until Anon,
John "El Presidente" Shaw

Next Meeting
"Video Night"

Tuesday, November 11, 2008
7:30 PM

Milanese Italian Restaurant
115 Main Street
Poughkeepsie, NY

Greetings Fellow Magi,

Well, since the last meeting was pretty much a no show for most of our members we are going to try to hold the elections again. By now most of you should have received your ballots and filled them out. I hope that we can finally put this to bed and elect the new board. I have just wrapped up another year at the Headless Horseman, performing close to 80 shows in 20 days. Last week I also flew to Vegas to perform at The Mandalay Bay Casino and was fortunate to perform with The Village People and Earth, Wind, & Fire. I got a chance to spend some time with Kevin James and see some other magic friends. I hope to see you all at this next meeting.

----

One last word about elections for new board members. If you did not receive the e-mail containing the election ballot, please reply to this e-mail and we will send you one. If you forget there will be hard copies that you can use at our next meeting.

The topic of the meeting for November will a VIDEO NIGHT. Please try to bring with you a short (10 min or less) video of your favorite performances. We'll provide the dvd/vcr/TV, you provide the show! It could be members, star magicians, or the unknown talent you accidentally caught performing the most miraculous double lift you've ever seen. And, special brownie points go to those that bring in old videos of themselves. Who wouldn't like to see themselves on the small screen with that 80's haircut?

Also, we would like to bring to your attention the fact that our own Ed Fitchett was mentioned in the most recent MUM as Assembly #35's "Go To Guy"....nicely done Ed!! Just Alan was also mentioned in the same issue and has a one page write up about him and his trip to Japan.....interesting article indeed.

Until Anon,
John "El Presidente" Shaw

**** SOME MAGIC NEWS YOU CAN USE ****

TV series will be featuring magic on U.S. television in November. However, the plots all have a familiar ring:

Brothers and Sisters
Sunday, November 9th, 10pm ET/PT, ABC
The “Do You Believe in Magic?” sub-plot revolves around an amateur magician who steps in and saves the day when the headliner at the world-famous Magic Manor calls in sick, threatening to ruin a special party. Consultant Tony Clark worked with actors Will McCormack and Sarah Jane Morris on the magic.

Pushing Daisies
Wednesday, November 19th, 8pm ET/PT, ABC
The ABC “dramedy” about a pie-maker with the ability to bring the dead back to life will air a magic-themed episode featuring Fred Willard as the Great Herrmann and Kerri Kenny as his assistant, Alexandria. Herrmann becomes the subject of attention when several of the main characters become witness to a trick gone horribly wrong. Much of the action in “Oh Oh Oh… It’s Magic” takes place at a famous magicians’ club, the Conjurer’s Castle.

World Magic Awards
Wednesday, November 26th, 8pm ET/PT, myNetworkTV
The 2008 World Magic Awards, originally slated to air in December, will hit the airwaves on Thanksgiving Eve, the same night on which World’s Greatest Magic specials enjoyed success during the late 1990s. Gay Blackstone coordinated the production, which was taped on October 11th and is hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.

REMEMBER: Dues are Due....PLease bring $25 dollars with you to the next meeting if you haven't already paid your dues. Thank you!!

Next Meeting
"Flea Market"

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008
7:30 PM

Milanese Italian Restaurant
115 Main Street
Poughkeepsie, NY

Members,

If the news of the previous month's meeting(s) hasn't travelled to a computer near you, I am pleased to inform you that the elections were held. The results are:

Derrin Berger: President
Marc Berger: Vice-president
Frank Monaco: Secretary
Joel Zaritzky: Treasurer
Craig Kunaschk: Scribe

To those who voted for me, I appreciate the support and confidence. It's good to know that although I was once just a smart-alec kid that showed up to meetings, your encouragement has led me to becoming just a smart-alec adult that can help run the meetings.

Over the past few years I've been involved in a number of club endeavors, from fundraisers to banquets, as both a performer and spectator, and the one theme that stands out the most is that this club has the means and ability to come together do great things. However, over these same past years, I've also noticed a trend that implies that this support is declining. It's not new news, and we've seen many meetings begin with comments about the same 5 or 6 members always being in the middle. I'll be the first to admit that this is sometimes the most efficient way to get things done, and that sometimes tasks fall outside our areas of expertise, but it still shouldn't preclude anyone from helping out in whatever way suits them best. We have a membership full of amateurs and professionals, performers and collectors, and hobbyists and dealers. We also have a variety of experiences outside the world of magic, spanning across a number of careers and age
groups. We can boast as one of the clubs with the highest number of life members, we have active charter members that have been recognized nationally, and we have members both past and present that have won national competitions. It's this diversity that should help the Al Baker Assembly to remain one of the strongest clubs in the S.A.M..

In an effort to help bolster participation and activity in the club, a few new items will be addressed. To start, our club website will be getting a small makeover, and will help boost communication within the club, and hopefully offer services to help those that are interested in magic within the area (Thank you Kevin Gough!). Second, the fellow officers and myself have decided to resurrect the club raffles. While these may sometimes be used for fundraising, many meetings will include raffle prizes that are awarded simply for participated. That being said, we would like to congratulate ROGER LEWIN for winning a FREE YEAR'S MEMBERSHIP! Our last meeting was a video night, those members who brought in videos to watch (even though we didn't get to them all) were entered into the raffle. So, even by just rummaging through a closet can lead to a lucky night. Also, we will begin to have meetings hosted by members (other than officers) and try to implement a "works-in-progress" portion of each meeting, where members can showcase a new effect or routine and open up to feedback. Finally, we will also be working to have a mix of outside and in house lectures, with the goal of once or twice a year bringing in a "big name" lecturer.

Now, on to new business. Our next meeting will be the ever popular FLEA MARKET!!! Clean off the shelves and make room for more! Bring in your wares to sell, and please, if you think you may have more to sell than would fit on a standard table please let us know so we can make arrangements to accommodate you. Also, the flea market will be free to members in good standing, so if you haven't paid your dues now would definitely be a good time. Guests and non-paid members will be charged $5 for the meeting.

Giddyup,
-Derrin

NEXT MEETING: December 9, 2008

Event: Flea Market

Place: Milanese Restaurant
115 Main St
Poughkeepsie, NY 12601
(845) 471-9533

Time: 7:30 PM

Admission Fee: Free to Members in good standing.
$5 for all others

One Last thing.......

Due to the extremely limited nature of Yahoo Mail that the club is currently using, we are looking into changing the mail client. We will try to keep the same name of Sam35Editor, but will most likely go to a more robust system like Gmail. We will keep you posted....Thank you
