S.A.M. #35 Newsletter 1/2004

This Month's Program
SUNDAY, January 11, 2004 - 7:00pm
Milanese Restaurant 115 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY
Alain Nu

"Alain Nu is a magician of the highest order.  To watch him is to throw out all the rules of physics. Time and space are malleable in Nu's deft hands." - Eric Brace, The Washington Post

RIGHT ON QUE notes from the president
Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone had a great holiday & a Happy New Year. We're starting off the new year with a bang! Alain Nu will be presenting a lecture on impromptu mentalism. This Sunday, January 11, 2004, @ 7:00 PM at the Milanese Restaurant in beautiful downtown Poughkeepsie. I know Dawn & myself, and a few others will be meeting around 5:30 for dinner, if anyone else would like to join us. It's a good way to thank Santino for letting us use the room without charge.

Alain Nu will be performing at The Center For Performing Arts in Rhinebeck, this Thursday,Friday,Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 pm. The tickets are $15.00 per person, but please call 845-876-3080 to make sure they still have availability.

I want to thank Derrin Berger for last month's lecturer Kostya Kimlat. Kostya is such a gifted performer, and his routines are so well thought out. No unnecessary moves, and a story that involves each and every move. This is a young man that I am sure we'll be seeing more of. He has a great future in magic ahead of him.

This past Sunday Dawn & I went to see LeGrand David in Beverly Mass, and got there an hour or two early. When we went in Marco was sitting at the door and I introduced myself as he greeted us. Just then David walked in and Marco introduced us to him. They treated us as if they knew us forever. Marco took us upstairs to a private waiting room. Some other magicians apparently had come early as well, and they introduced us to them . They seated us all center stage before they let in the audience. And what a show, I felt as if I was in 1920 watching one of the greats. After the show David & Marco met everyone in the lobby to say good bye & sign autographs. Marco is 72 years old and still performing, but how much longer till he is retried? This show is worth the drive & tell them your from Al Baker assembly # 35.

Have a Great week, see ya Sunday

This Month's Program
Tuesday, February 17, 2004 - 7:30pm

Chris Capehart

Chris Capehart is an accomplished performer of magic. He started doing magic over thirty years ago (with just one trick) on the streets of NYC where he dazzled some of the toughest crowds in the world.

RIGHT ON QUE notes from the president
Hello everyone,

As I am writing this its snowing like crazy, but the good news is it's just 8 more weeks till April first. Alain Nu gave us a good lecture, I enjoyed several of his effects and really liked his spoon bending, it looked great. The nice thing about mentalism is you walk in with a briefcase, do an hour and a half, close it and you are gone. No heavy props, animals or assistants. Everyone I talked with that saw his show in Rhinebeck enjoyed it.

Dawn & I went to the Tom Blue book auction in NYC. We picked up a few good books. I realized that I have a lot of doubles. So, I am putting a list together & will E-mail it to everyone before I put them on E-Bay. Most are in new condition & first Edtions.  Some are still in the plastic wrap.

This month lecture will be on Tuesday the 17th of February at the Milanese Restaurant, 115 Main Street,  Poughkeepsie @ 7:30 PM.   Derrin Berger and Frank Monaco were able to book Chris Capehart for that night. Chris is an accomplished street performer who has gone through the trials and tribulations of that type of performing.  He has some
great stories about street performing and also does the fastest linking and unlinking ring move you will ever see in your life.  It looks impossible until he shows you what he is actually doing.  Trust us, you don't want to miss this lecture, it will be fantastic.  Thank you Derrin and Frank for lining this up.  Hope to see you there.

Info about Chris Capehart

To say that Chris Capehart is an accomplished magician is a serious understatement. Chris started performing magic on the streets of New York City over thirty years ago. Armed with just one trick and quick come-back verbal skills Chris dazzled his way into the hearts of some of the toughest crowds in the world!

Chris' talent for entertaining audiences is near legendary. I personally have seen Chris bring lay audiences AND magician audiences to their knees with his magic. But don't take my word for it. Read on...

Chris Capehart is called the Ring Master and for very good reasons. Many years ago Chris was asked to contribute his Three Ring Routine to the highly acclaimed "Stars of Magic" magic series (number 13 if you're curious). According to Tony Spina of Tannen's, Chris' routine quickly became the hottest selling issue of the entire series! That's no small feat considering the caliber of the magic in the series and the number of ring routines published throughout magicdom.

In addition to being a regular headliner at the famous "Monday Night Magic" in New York City, Chris has performed in Atlantic City at the Tropicana and has been invited to perform in nightclubs in Trinidad, Africa, Canada, Mexico and all over the United States. In 2002 the Delaware Knights of Magic voted Chris the "2002 Magician of the Year" and at last year's Abbott's Get Together, he was awarded the prestigious Senator Crandall Award for comedy.

In July 2003 at the Society of American Magicians national convention in Las Vegas, Chris Capehart was chosen as one of the Top Five Black Magicians In The Country. In February 2004 he will be one of the featured magicians on the television show "The Art and Soul of Magic" produced by Glen Farrington

RIGHT ON QUE notes from the president
Hello everyone,
I want to apologize for the last minute change in our meeting program last month, but it was unavoidable.  We are going to try this one more time, and this time it should work.  Chris Capehart called to tell us that this month he would come up and give us one heck of a lecture.  Frank has spoken with him again, and has lined him up for our next meeting on March 9th.  This meeting will be at Central Hudson, so please do not go to the Milanese this month.  This promises to be an excellent lecture, that I am sure you will enjoy.  I hope to see you there!

What we learned from Chris Capehart

RIGHT ON QUE notes from the president
Hello Everyone,

Well, I am glad that Chris Capehart finally made it to us.  What a great lecture!  Chris really gave us his all, his carefree style presentation and then explaining the routines was excellent.  I enjoyed his stories of working the streets of NYC.  I believe that everyone had a good time and learned something.

This month we're going to work on what we learned from Chris.  Please bring a deck of cards, some coins and anything you're working on.  If you bought his lecture notes, bring them with you.  Has anyone tried his ring routine?  I've been working on the six coins across, but I need a lot of work.

This month we'll also be discussing our banquet and a D.A.R.E. show.  We need stage performers and people to work back stage.

This month's meeting will be held at the Milanese @ 7:30pm.  We'll be there for dinner around 6:00pm if anyone would like to join us.  Next month's meeting will also be at the Milanese on Sunday, May 9th, 7:30pm when our National President Jay Gorham will be joining us.

See Ya Tuesday

Coin Workshop & DVD Giveaway

RIGHT ON QUE notes from the president
Hello Everyone,
I would like to thank everyone that attended last month's meeting. We had a small group of members present. We discussed a possible DARE show to raise funds for the club. Santino gave us a date for our banquet, Sunday June 13, 2004. After some small talk, Neech Costantino got up and showed us a couple of nice vanishes with a table cloth. Then he told the club about some of his upcoming shows. Carlo DeBlasio followed with an egg bag and a mentalism routine.

Thank you both for the entertainment.  Then I invited everyone to my home to see my magic room, which Dawn & I just completed. So Barbara, Carlo, Don, Geo, Joe & Pauline went to our house and talked for a few more hours. All in all, it turned out to be a fun night.

Next, I have some very sad news, Jay Gorham our national president, had his son pass away suddenly this week. I don't have all the details, but it was very sudden. Dawn has sent a card on the club's behalf. Anyone wishing to send there condolences can to: Jay & Pat Gorham 918 East Loma Vista St. Gilbert, AZ 85296

This month, Tuesday 5/11, we'll be having a coin work shop at the Milanese. The first 20 members to the meeting will receive a free DVD on Coin Magic. Please bring COINS quarts, halfs or Silver dollars and any of your favorite routines. We will exchange effects and tips on coin magic, so you can leave having something to show your coworkers on Wednesday. Dawn & I will be there around 5:30 - 6:00 for dinner if you like to join us.

Diamond Magic Dealer Lecture

National President Jay Gorham visit

All Members and Non-Members Free

RIGHT ON QUE notes from the president
I'd like to thank everyone who participated in last month's coin workshop. I don't want to start naming names, because I know I will forget someone. At one time, there were 3 different tables going on at once. There were a lot of good ideas flying around. Everyone I spoke with had a good time, so I think we'll have a few more workshops in the future. We are lucky to have a large group with a lot of magic knowledge.

This month is a double header! Eddie Gardner from Diamond's Magic out of the Boston area is coming to do a dealer lecture and National President Jay Gorham will be visiting us as well.

Eddie is coming a long way, so if there is anything you are looking for please E-mail Frank at frank430@aol.com. He'll forward your order to Eddie so he can bring it with him. You can check out his web site at www.diamondsmagic.com.  He has a huge selection of books, tapes, CDs and magic.

National President Jay Gorham escorted by Life Member chairman Clem Kinnicutt, will be joining us as well.  If you have never had an opportunity to meet either of these fine gentlemen please try to make it out to this meeting.  Jay and Clem always bring with them many surprises and some very interesting magic.  Come out and meet our National President and say Hi.

Like always we'll meet for dinner at 5:30-6:00 with Jay, Clem & Eddie. Everyone is welcome!

See Ya's Tuesday

This Month's Program
SEPTEMBER MEETING - Rings, Strings and Things
Tuesday Sept 14, 2004 Meeting
Central Hudson Auditorium
Route 9 Poughkeepsie
7:30 PM
HOST - Joe Que

RIGHT ON QUE Words from the president
Hello Everyone,
Welcome Back... I hope everyone had a happy and safe summer.  I look forward to seeing you all at our first meeting for the "new magical year."  It will be this Tuesday Sept 14th, 2004 at 7:30 PM at Central Hudson.

Dawn and I have been busy, busy, busy and are looking forward to taking a break and seeing everyone again for some magical happenings.  This first meeting will be the same as in the past, basically a meet and greet.  Bring yourself and a friend who may have expressed interest in the club in months past.  We need new members to keep the club strong and moving forward in the years to come.

Aside from meet and greet, the theme for the evening will be a workshop type meeting named Rings, Strings and Things.  That means bring something to perform and have some fun with.  It can be a rope trick, ring and string, cups and balls, new mentalism routine, whatever you would like to show around.  Please do at least bring one thing with you, otherwise it will be a very short and boring meeting.

How to see everyone there....

Joe Que, President, SAM #35

OCTOBER MEETING - John Shaw and Halloween Magic
Tuesday Oct 12, 2004
Central Hudson Auditorium
Route 9 Poughkeepsie
7:30 PM
Host - Joe Que

RIGHT ON QUE Words from the president
Happy Halloween !!!

It's that time of year again and everyone should be booked with shows. Halloween brings out all the nutty people and I have one of the biggest (no I don't mean Dawn), John Shaw will be stopping by to show us some of his new side show endeavors.  He's performing at the Headless Horseman now till Nov 7. I don't even want to try to explain his newest stunt. You will just have to see it for your self to believe it!

I would like to see a few people bring in their favorite Halloween pieces. Whether it's a standard trick that you adapted to a Halloween theme, or a good ghost story.

I'd like to wish David & Kathy Haines a safe & fun cruise. They will be leaving for a 13 month sail working for Royal Caribbean. They have paid there dues, now they can reap the benefits. If no one hears from me, I'll be in one of Dave's trunks so don't worry.

Also, Carlo DeBlasio will be presenting MYSTERIUM at 7:00p.m. on Tuesday October 19th, 2004 at the Grant E. Morse School in Saugerties, NY.  For tickets and information please telephone (845) 246-1652 and ask for the Grant D. Morse School and your call will be directed.

See ya at Central Hudson

NOVEMBER MEETING - GAZZO Lecture (Street Performer)
Tuesday Nov 9, 2004
Milanese Restaurant
115 Main St. Poughkeepsie , NY 12601 Phone: (845) 471-9533
7:30 PM
Host - Joe Que

About GAZZO
"When you see Gazzo perform, you're getting 200%. He's 100% magician and 100% comedian. The two aspects of his character simultaneously feed and devour each other to produce a riotously entertaining street act that would burst Merlin's eyeballs and the spleen of Don Rickles." - Ed Parrish, Magic Magazine

Gazzo is one of the worlds most entertaining and experienced street workers. This will be a chance to experience a lecture from a magician and entertainer who is rightly regarded as one of the best there is. The lecture will be just that - a lecture, applicable to working professionals and hobbyists alike.

Gazzo has worked in major cities all over the world. He still works festivals and fairs throughout Europe and the United States. His recently released lecture video on the Cups and Balls is acknowledged as the most in-depth and informative works on the subject. Indeed his Cups and Balls Routine is a masterpiece of timing and showmanship. It is a brilliant routine created for the street, but Gazzo has performed it on stages all over the world including festivals, nightclubs, and world famous cruise ships--including the QE2. His most recent work is Phantoms of the Card Table with David Britland

His Story
Born in 1960, Gazzo has had an interest in magic since the age of nine. As a teenager he worked as a lookout for one of the great London three-card monte mobs run by the notorious con artist Cracker Parker. In his late teens, Gazzo left England for America in search of the worlds greatest card shark, a legend known as the subject of the book The Phantom of the Card Table. The Phantom was in fact Walter Irving Scott described by Max Holden as "the greatest man ever with a pack of cards". Gazzo would soon become The Phantom's only student.

His studies finished, Gazzo began performing armed with talent, charm, and a wild style. Rather than use his skills for larceny, he used his talent to entertain, and his exploits are legendary in the entertainment world. From cruise ships to Las Vegas showrooms, Gazzo has wowed them all. His brand of comedy is perfect for almost any situation, and his skills as a performer of the impossible are beyond even the wildest of imaginations. He was a consultant and performer on the Canadian Discovery Channel series Grand Illusions and is a favorite at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. His rare appearances at magic conventions are always a hit.

"Gazzo is a very clever magician... who is hysterically funny as well."
Bill Downs - Comedy Connection Boston, MA

"Hilariously funny...highly entertaining...a definite crowd pleaser! (Now can I have my wallet back!)"
Paul Barclay, Owner - The Rack, Boston's number one entertainment attraction

"Gazzo is clever, funny, and very entertaining. He will wow you!"
George Bakeman, Owner - Bakey's Pub

"Gazzo is simply the best! Funny, fast, and very entertaining!"
John B. Brown - Mr. Dooley's Pub

"Great magic and personality plus!"
Tom Hayes - Fuji Film

"Uproariously entertaining...a very clever magician!"

When you are reading this Dawn and I are still in Las Vegas, but will be back in time for the next meeting.

S.A.M. #35 Newsletter 12/2004

This Month's Program
December MEETING - Flea Market Auction
Tuesday, December 14, 2004 - 7:30pm
Central Hudson Auditorium,  Poughkeepsie
Hosted by: Roger Lewin
Free to members & guests

NEW FORMAT FOR FLEA MARKET/AUCTION

OK, here is what we would like to try this year at the yearly FLEA MARKET/AUCTION.  We will start with a typical business meeting, then we will go into the flea market.  Tables will be set up, so you can lay out your stuff that you want to sell in the flea market portion of the program.  After about 25 minutes or so, we will have an auction portion of the program, that will continue for the rest of the night.  Now here's the twist.....During the Flea market portion, you can also lay out stuff that will be in the auction, but have a BUY IT NOW price marked on it.  The BUY IT NOW price is not negotiable.  If no one buys your product during the Flea Market, using the buy it now price, it then goes into the auction to start at a minimum bid that you have provided us. The idea is, to keep the buy it now price reasonable and a bargain of sorts.  This will tempt people to buy it now, rather then wait for the auction and run the risk of the price going too high and competing with everyone else.  We will explain this at the meeting and you can also e-mail me with any questions that you may have.  Send questions to Frank430@aol.com

Things to Remember

1) Flea market will run the entire meeting, even during the auction.

2) Please make your auction items at least $10 or more, we are not going
to auction off a Thumb Tip or a Svengali deck for 50 cents or a
dollar.  Group several effects together to make a package type deal.

3) Please make your BUY IT NOW price reasonable, we don't want to see
   any $45 Invisible decks.

4) PLEASE have minimum bids WRITTEN out for the auction for all your
items, so we know what we can start with during the auction, it make
   things go a lot faster.

5) Don't be afraid to auction off something that may be expensive.  Have
a minimum price and if it doesn't hit the minimum price it won't
   sell....period.

6) Please try to have a short description of everything you are
auctioning off, especially if it is not a common effect that everyone
   may know.

7) Also PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do not ATTACK people that are putting
out stuff for the Flea Market.  No one will be allowed to buy
ANYTHING until all the items are put out, and the business meeting is
   over.

One last thing, Steve Johnson has provided this link for some of the items he is selling.  Please take a look some good stuff.  www.geocities.com/stevencjohnson/magic4sale.html

RIGHT ON QUE Words from the president
I'd like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday season.  Also, I hope everyone enjoyed last month's lecture by Gazzo.  I thought he was very good and enjoyed him very much.  He and I got to talk before and after the meeting and he is a really nice guy who is quite talented.

This month, as you know, is our yearly Flea Market/Auction.  Once thing to remember, is please BRING SOMETHING. Last time we had this it was less then a roaring success. I know for a fact, there are several members bringing in some pretty good stuff this year, so you want to be there to get the bargains.  Also, we are going to do things a little different this year, Frank has provided some information further down in the newsletter that will explain everything, please read it carefully.

One last thing, I want everyone to understand that this is OUR club not any one person's club, so if you have an idea or an opinion on something that we are doing do not be afraid to voice it please.  I know some people seem to be holding back on ideas or comments they may have, so please don't.  I am sure we would all like to hear feedback from fellow members and everyone should and does have an equal voice.  Please don't
be afraid to let us know what you are thinking before after and especially during the business meetings. We try our best to give you what we feel are quality programs month after month.  The frustrating part is, not being able to tell whether you feel the same way.  So, please do not feel funny when you voice your comments or opinions.  If you feel we need to spend more time on a subject during the business meeting, speak up and we will explore the subject in more detail.  I know we don't always have a ton of time during the business meeting, so maybe what we can do is bring the idea up again the following month.  Just a few words of helpful advice to make the club more enjoyable.

Joe Que, President, SAM #35
