Annual Auction

Hosted by Roger Lewin & Gale Alexander

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I hope everyone's holiday season was both happy and safe. I would like to start off by thanking Ed Fitchett and George Post for performing the broken wand ceremony in memory of compeer John Treyz. Both of these gentlemen did an excellent job with the ceremony, making it a very special night.

The next course of events was video night. I want to thank the many people who brought in videotapes for viewing. Video night seemed to be enjoyed by all, mostly due to the hard work of Ed Fitchett and Steve Johnson. The night  included many videos of performances from various entertainers, both widely  known and obscure. All in all, I believe everyone had an enjoyable evening and the event was well received.

This month we will be having our annual auction, so dig in your closets and find those things that you want to sell. Gale Alexander has once again graciously agreed to be our auctioneer for the evening. Thank you Gale. The auction usually has many unique items and great deals associated with it, so please plan on attending.

I hope to see everyone at the meeting in January with lots of great stuff to sell. Also remember you can sell magic related items such as P.A. systems, magic costumes (tuxedos, etc). Please make sure the items that you do sell are in good condition, and if possible, contain the original directions for the effect.

Finally, due to increased security measures at Central Hudson, I would like to encourage everyone to try their very best to arrive at 7:30pm, no later. The reason for this is that Central Hudson no longer allows the doors to remain unlocked and open. This forces us to post one of our club members at the door to allow people to enter. So please be prompt, or unfortunately you may have difficulty gaining entrance into the building. Thank you.

Frank Monaco

Lecture by Past National President Craig Dickson

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Hi again everyone,
I hope everybody enjoyed the last meeting and the huge....ok, the big.....ok, ok, the little 'ole auction; I want to thank everyone who brought magic in to sell, especially Craig Kunaschk, who emptied out what seemed to be his entire collection. I also want to thank Roger Lewin and Gale Alexander for all their hard work...Thanks Guys!! If you weren't there, you missed some great magic deals, especially deals on videos.; All in all, I think everyone had a fun time, especially when Joe Que took over as auctioneer and used his own method of "Forced Bidding" to meet the minimum bid price. Very funny stuff...
I want to let everyone know that we are working on putting on another DARE show.; Some of you will remember the DARE shows we used to do several years ago.... well, we are trying to put one more together for the month of April.; I will fill everyone in on the details at the next meeting, but briefly so far this is what has happened. Myself and Joe Que have started the ball rolling.; I have contacted Barbara Sause from Hyde Park who is in charge of the DARE programs.; She is trying to get the Haviland Middle School for April.; Joe Que has contacted Greg Gulamerian who has agreed to be our closing illusion act.; What we need now is a few volunteers to run curtains, do close-up in the lobby, etc.; Please think about it and let me know if you are interested and contact me by phone, e-mail, or seeing me at the next meeting.; We are also going to use this DARE show as our May SAM event that national is asking us to put together.; We will take pictures of this event and they will be displayed at the big 100th year celebration in NYC in July.; For those of you that don't know what I am talking about, national has asked all the assemblies to put on a special event in May and to take pictures so they can be displayed on a giant collage at the big event in July.; Like I said before, I will fill everyone in at our next meeting.
Speaking of our next meeting, it should be a really good one. We have Craig Dickson coming in for a very interesting lecture. As Past National President, Craig never ceases to amaze and amuse us with new and old effects alike. Craig's great sense of humor and his extremely vast knowledge of magic always provides for an excellent lecture. I have also asked Craig to bring some items to sell from his dealer "stock" which I am sure everyone will be interested in. This will not be a dealer lecture, Craig is just bringing a few things to sell for those of you who might like to pick up a few new things. It should be a great time so try not to miss it. See everyone in Feb...

Lecture by
JAY SCOTT BERRY

LAST MINUTE SURPRISE!
Last September 13th we were in communication with Jay Scott Berry for a lecture this March.  Because of the events of that time period we miscommunicated and didn't confirm our schedule.  SURPRISE to everyone - Jay Scott Berry is on his way to Poughkeepsie and is scheduled to do a lecture for us Tuesday, March 12th.

To fit everything in we will have a brief 5 minute meeting promptly starting at 7:30, then magic from M-U-M, then Jay Scott Berry's lecture starting around 8pm.

We hope you will enjoy this activity packed night and bring a friend.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Hello Everyone,
I hope you all enjoyed Craig Dickson last month!  I know several people did come up to me afterwards and commented on how much they enjoyed his lecture.  Craig really does a great job, and always has a lot of interesting history to go with his magic.  Thanks again Craig for a great time.

This month be ready for Magic from MUM.  Several of our members will be
performing effects selected from MUM.  I want to thank everyone that volunteered for this, and I have to say I a really looking forward to it. Please let's have a good turn out to show our support.

Speaking of support and turnout, the plans for our April 13th DARE Show are coming along nicely.  Joe Quitoni and I have lined up some great talent for the show including Greg Gulamerian, John Shaw, David and Kathy Haines, and Chris Chiappini.  This show should be excellent!  Also, John Shaw will be promoting the show on 101.5 WPDH, so our turnout should be very good.  I
will go into more details at our March meeting, so please try to make it.

Also, please keep in mind that our current officers are looking for people interested in holding office next year.  Please let one of the current officers know you are interested, so we can put your name in when it comes time for the voting.  If you need more information on what a
particular officer does or has as their responsibility, please ask the current officer who holds that position.

Hope to see everyone at the March meeting.

Collectors Night
(and Pizza)

Umbertos at Mama Marisa's on Route 9

Hello All,
I want to formally thank everyone that helped out at the DARE show in April.  Craig Kunaschk on curtains, Gio Mazzarelli, Don Deich doing close-up in the lobby.  Marty Steinberg even helped out with the closeup for a bit, Joe Que, Dawn Que, Joe Quattrone, David and Kathy Haines, Greg and Brooke Gulamerian, and John Shaw.  The show went very well except for a little technical difficulty with the lights and sound not up to snuff.  Other then that it was a great show and all the performs were excellent.  I was a little disappointed though by the rather light turnout of our club members considering we packed the place and it was a sellout.  However, despite all that, it was a great time and we showed Hyde Park that Sam #35 knows how to put on a show.  Thank you once again for all the people that really came through for the club.  I for one really appreciate it!

Well, get set for our next meeting in May, it should be a really good one.  We are having a gathering at Umbertos at Mama Marisa's on Route 9 here in Poughkeepsie.  Our Scribe Craig is hosting the event and he has some nice things lined up for us that I am sure you will all enjoy.  Craig thanks again for your hard work with this event.  Also thanks to Steve Johnson for helping with this event as well...good old Steve, always there when you need him!!  Please look for details about this event below.

One last thing, please remember that we need to select officers for next year VERY soon.  So if you would like to be considered please let us know ASAP, the time is quickly approaching.  You can contact any of the current officers for information or details.  Hope to see everyone in May.

SCRIBE'S MESSAGE
Hi,

We had a great benefit show for DARE in April to replace our regular meeting.  If you had a chance to see the show I'm sure you loved it.  If you missed it, you have your chance to see all members in just under two weeks at our meeting on Tuesday, May 14.  The meeting is NOT at Central Hudson this month which I'm sure Steve and Frank will remind you of a few times.

Our May meeting centers around Magic collecting.  Please bring along a few items that you'd like to show off.  If you plan on bringing something let me know at gammabean@aol.com -- you can also contact Giovanni as well.

Books, effects, autographs, comic books, posters, throw cards, palming coins, broken thread, handcuffs, etc. -- if you collect it, share your passion with some other members.  Who knows you just may find a kindred spirit.

I'm sure you have something more interesting than my collection of meeting notes submitted to M.U.M. - which I can't get to since my computer crashed anyway.

See you on Tuesday, May 14th!

Best,

Craig Kunaschk

Open Magic Night
Bring yourself and tricks to share and show

RIGHT ON QUE notes from the president
Hello everyone. Hope you're all enjoying the summer. Its been a HOT one. There where days that inside the shop it was over a 100 degrees. Dawn & myself haven't done much, except work on our new magic room. We can only work on it a couple of hours at night & on Sunday - so it seems like it's taking forever. But the sheet rock is primed & we're putting in the dropped ceiling. Plus the heat has kept us from having any bar-b-Ques or doing much of anything.  We've only taken one trip on the motorcycle. We left Friday night, went to Maine, New Hampshire & into Massachusetts to see the Le Grand David Show. But they where closed till the end of September. So we went over to Salem, Massachusetts for the day. We got home Sunday night with 685 miles under our belts.

I 'd like to say that the N.Y.C. Convention was Great! We had a great turn out from our club - too many to even start to name. There was so much going on we ended up talking to people in the hallways. Father Cyprian did a fantastic job on the program book. It is definitely a collector's piece. The poster is also a beautiful piece. It has 32 head shots on it, which I had signed by 26 of the performers and framed to display in the shop office. Stop by to see it.
Have a great day & see ya in September.

Joe Que

LAST MEETING
Member John Hoey kicked off the evening with an act from his show with a lead in to our special guests for the evening.  Jeff McBride and Eugene Burger dropped in for a visit and gave us a "mini performance" preview of their show that was running at The Center for Performing Arts in Rhinebeck.  Our year ended on a high note with magic and camaraderie with an added surprise of guest performers.

SEPTEMBER MEETING
Tuesday, September 10, 2002 - 7:30pm
Central Hudson Auditorium, 284 Rte. 9, Poughkeepsie
Program:  Open house & programming
Bring yourself and tricks to share and show.  This is a relaxed evening of magic and camaraderie.
To kick off the year we ask all members to attend to help plan programs and events for the year.  We already have leads for EXCELLENT lectures and this is your opportunity to help us choose the menu.  After the phenomenal convention in July and the press it generated along with the new Houdini stamp, the public is more aware of the existence of magic organizations and the participation opportunities they present.  If you know someone interested in magic feel free to bring them along.  Refreshments will be served.

ELECTION RESULTS FOR 2002-2003 OFFICERS
Elections for officers for the new year were held at the June meeting with the following elected to office:
Joe Quitoni President
Giovanni Mazzarelli Vice President
Steve Johnson Secretary
Roger Lewin Treasurer
Craig Kunaschk Scribe

AN EVENT TO REMEMBER!
For those of you that didn't make it to New York City July 3-6, you missed magical history in the making.  Many Assembly members will agree that  Society of American Magicians hosted one of the BEST magic conventions ever, and at the same time celebrated the 100th anniversary of the organization which started in NYC a century ago.

The first day started with the U.S. Post Office unavailing the Houdini Stamp with the help of none other than David Copperfield.  Every registrant was presented with a first day issue of the stamp which was only one of the special gifts given each day to registrants.  The S.A.M. had been petitioning the postal service for over 20 years to get this accomplished and it was a nice start to the centennial kickoff.

Each day was filled with various lectures, activities, shows, and even a mini display of historical items that was so well orchestrated by the convention committee that makes you wonder how many years this whole event was in the planning.

Our top hats our off to Convention Chair Brad Jacobs and his staff for doing a fantastic job!
Next year's convention will take place in LasVegas where our friend Jay Gorham will take the helm as National President.

Lecture by Dave Cressey

RIGHT ON QUE notes from the president
After a slow start we're off and running.  We received a lot of good ideas for this years meetings, and our board is working on making all the arrangements.  Dave Cressey will be with us October 8 for a lecture.  I'm sure he'll have a lot of surprises in the way of paper goods mouth coils, hat tears, and streamers.

I'd like to thank Ed Fitchett and John Hoey for their magical entertainment, a nice finish to our meeting.  Congratulations to Greg & Brooke, Dave & Kathy & John Shaw and thank you for all their work on our D.A.R.E. show.  For those of you not at our last meeting, we presented them with gift certificates for dinner.

We'll have a small workshop before our meeting, please bring an old deck of cards that can be ripped up & a small paper bag.  I will start with a trick Dave Cressey taught at a club lecture 10 years ago.  Anyone else with a rip & restored card trick please bring it with you.

I would like to know if there is any interest in having a banquet at the end of the year.  I talked with Jeff McBride and he said he would be interested in performing.  I also would like to see what Rudy Coby is doing these days?  Just give it some thought.

Joe Que

LAST MEETING
After planning and brainstorming for meeting program ideas for the new year, the members were treated to performances by Ed Fitchett and John Hoey.

Ed started things off with a FANtastic patriotic color changing fan and then demonstrated some "science magic" with an egg passing in & out of milk bottle that can only be describes as EGGStraordinary.

John Hoey closed off the performance portion with a creative ensemble of airborne glass, streamers, dove from balloon which was then vanished all to fast paced music.

Ed Fitchett
Honored for 60 Years as a S.A.M. Member
and Charter Member of Assembly #35!
With National President Ed Thomas
(Milanese Restaurant, 110 Main Street, Poughkeepsie)

RIGHT ON QUE notes from the president
Hope everyone's Halloween was good.  Dawn & I celebrated our 16th wedding Anniversary, we just practiced the first 5 years - then figured what the hell, lets get married on Halloween and we'll have a great costume party.  We go to Las Vegas every year.  This year we were there 10 days and didn't see a single magic show!  We went to see Darren Romeo but he was canceled.  Then we went to see Ron Lucus but he took the day off.  We did get to see EFX at the MGM with Rick Springfield which was a good show.  We also saw Carrot Top.

I'd like to thank Dave Cressey for a great lecture last month.  Who else gives free lecture notes & tokens.  I'm sure there is a lot of tissue paper flying around town lately since the lecture.  I know Dave sold out of some of his mouth coils.  His card in the bag is a great trick, which I've been doing since he taught it to us 8 years ago at one of our meetings.

(Dave Cressey doing pack of cards through table and his famous card in bag trick. Click images to enlarge)

This month's program is going to be a super meeting - one you don't want to miss.  We will be having a reception for our Nation President Ed Thomas, who will be making a presentation to our own Ed Fitchett for 60 years as an SAM member.  It is also our clubs 60th year anniversary.

The meeting will be held at Milanese restaurant 115 Main Street Poughkeepsie (471-9533) which is owned by Santino, a member of our club.  Dawn and I had dinner there the other night.  Afterwards, Santino and myself were exchanging magic tricks.  Before long we had his customers, waitress then the cooks at our table.  I think we ripped up at lest 3 packs of cards doing Dave's card & bag trick.  We had a nice night out with friends.

Santino will be cooking up a big Italian buffet with salad, fried Calimari, Mussels marinara, Chicken marsala, Baked Ziti & Pasta Primavera.  Cake and coffee followed by some special magic performances.  Free to all paid members, $10.00 per guest.

What a GREAT meeting! Fantastic turn out, good food, good magic and a lot of fun.  I received numerous phone calls from members saying how much they enjoyed the meeting.  I'd like to thank Santino not only for the good food, but also for the meeting place and everyone else who came and made it a special night.
