SAM #35 Newsletter (1/2001)

President's Words

I hope everyone had a happy and healthy Holiday season.  Last month, as you know, was our auction and despite the somewhat light turnout, it was a lot of fun and some great items went up for bid at bargain prices.  The excitement really picked up though when Don Deich started buying back some of his own items, thanks to his girlfriend.  Also, not to be outdone, Giovanni started bidding against himself because, and I quote, "I like the excitement."  A fun time was had by all...

Coming up this month our own video/film guru Ed Fitchett is putting together several rare and fun video and film clips, that he and other members have come up with.  It may not be too late, if you have something you would like to contribute, please let Ed know ASAP.  Time however, is tight, and with the Holidays this newsletter may not reach everyone via snail mail in time.  We apologize for that.  Anyway, this month promises to be a unique and interesting night not to be missed.  The Club will provide free snacks and drinks for all that attend.   Well, I am going to keep it short this month, and hopefully chat about some of the items I didn't cover here when I see you ....at the movies. See you all soon.
Frank Monaco

FEBRUARY MEETING
Lecture by Past National President George Schindler
Tuesday, February 13, 2001 - 7:30pm
Central Hudson Auditorium, 284 Rte. 9, Poughkeepsie
Hosted by: Steve Johnson~463-4033, scjohnson@netzero.net
George Schindler is not only P.N.P. but the recipient of the Parent Assembly Magician of the Year award.  George's includes corporate work, feature films, and much experience in the entertainment industry.  His lecture is a MUST SEE!

President's Words
Happy February All,
Just wanted everyone, who could not make our last meeting, to know it was a lot of fun.  Thanks to Ed Fitchett for hosting and putting together some very nice video footage and also Steve Johnson for handling the yummy snacks we had.  There was some great video footage shown both old and new.  Steve Johnson brought some hysterical footage from the Johnny Carson show both magic related and non magic related.....very funny stuff!!  There were some people that brought footage that was not able to be shown, one in particular was George Post.  George brought some of our own club members performing, which we did not get a chance to see.  I
want to apologize to George for that, because that footage would have been a nice way to round out the evening.  This meeting seemed to go over well so hopefully there will be a next time in which footage such as that can be shown.  Once again I would like to thank Ed Fitchett and Steve Johnson for making this an excellent meeting.

Also, as I mentioned at our last meeting, our May banquet is fast approaching and as such some additional information will be included in this newsletter.  So, if you are planning on coming to the May 6th dinner, please plan on contacting us soon to make your reservations. Steve Johnson has been working very hard to provide us with good food, great entertainment and a comfortable atmosphere for the May 6th Dinner, so reserve your spot(s) early and don't be left out.   One last thing, the April meeting will NOT be at Central Hudson.  We are working on finding an alternate meeting place and as soon as it is finalized we will let you know, in the Newsletter or by E-mail.    Well, that's about it for right now, hope to see you all at the George Schindler lecture shortly.  May your Hocus always be followed by a Pocus...

MARCH MEETING
Program:  Dealer Lecture by Diamond Magic
Hosted by: Steve Johnson~463-4033, scjohnson@netzero.net
Eddie of Diamond's Magic from Peabody, MA will be presenting a dealer show.  If you would like him to bring any thing specific contact Eddie by e-mail:  eddie@diamondsmagic.com.  You may check their extensive inventory of magic, books and videos by visiting their web site:  www.Diamondsmagic.com

Location: Central Hudson Auditorium, 284 Rte. 9, Poughkeepsie
Hosted by: Steve Johnson~463-4033, scjohnson@netzero.net

President's Words
Last month we had George Schindler as our guest lecturer and a good time was had by all. George used his unique style of magic-comedy to give a very funny and informative lecture. He actually taught Giovanni to do a very effective sponge ball vanish in 5 minutes. It looked like Giovanni was doing the vanish for years when George was done.

In the lecture itself, George actually stressed one thing, and that was "Entertainment First." He is a very big proponent of entertaining the audience as opposed to a lot of other magicians who just try to fool. George proved his point several times as he performed several very funny and entertaining routines in which he graciously shared every point and nuance with us. It was fantastic having one of the seasoned pros stop by our club and share the knowledge he has gained over the years.

This month we are having Diamond Magic come in for a Dealer lecture. So if you have anything special you would like them to bring please let me know and we will try to have them bring it.

Recently, I received a call from SAM National telling me that the National President, Jann Wherry Goodsell, will be in our area in April. She has expressed an interest in visiting our club and has asked us to have a meeting outside of our normal time. I thought it would be a good idea to have a "Meet the President Night." This event will be held at our normal time of 7:30 PM but will be on April 24th instead of our usual second Tuesday of the month. I am working on details as to where we will hold it and this information will be passed on to you in this newsletter. It will basically be a meeting held at a local restaurant or hotel in which we will have complimentary food and drink provided by the club. Members will be admitted free of charge, non members will be expected to pay $10. I am asking all our members to please attend, if possible, to make a good showing for our President. Further details about this event will follow.
That's it for now.......Hope to see everyone at the next meeting.

Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel (next to the Civic Center)
40 Civic Center Plaza, Poughkeepsie

Program:  Meet the President
Hosted by: Frank Monaco~229-9765, frank430@aol.com
President Frank Monaco has arranged for National SAM President Jann Goodsell to visit our Assembly and meet with members.  IMPORTANT!  Please contact Frank A.S.A.P. to let him know if you are attending and if you will have a guest.

President's Words
Last month we had Eddie Gardner of Diamond's Magic.  Based in Peabody, Massachusetts, he transported a multitude of magic books, videos, and props from his mail order magic business and gave a great demonstration of his wares.

I want to apologize for the newsletter being late.  That being said, I am sure you will be happy to know that this month's meeting will be held at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel on April 24th at our usual time of 7:30 PM.  The National President, Jann Wherry Goodsell, will be coming down to meet us and address the club.  As such, I thought it would be a great opportunity to have what I am calling "Meet the President" night.  This will include free food and open bar at the Poughkeepsie Grand hotel.  The night will basically be a casual meeting where the National President will be here to answer questions, address any issues you may have, and just chat.  Also, please bring any pet effects that you like to perform, because the night will be just a fun get together for all to enjoy.  This event will be FREE to paid members of our local assembly and one guest.  All others will have to pay $20 per person.  I am asking people to please let me know ahead of time if they are planning on coming as soon as possible, because I must supply the Hotel with a fairly accurate count.  Call me at 845-229-9765 and leave a message or send me an E-mail at Frank430@aol.com.  Also, I would like to ask that you make an extra effort to attend because I would like to have a good showing for our National President.  Well, that's it for now.   Hope to see you at the next meeting.......I really mean it this time! :-)

June Meeting
Open Magic Night, Hosted by: George Franzen
This is YOUR chance to show off or discuss your latest routine, share ideas and talk magic.
Tuesday, June 12, 2001 - 7:30pm
Central Hudson Auditorium, 284 Rte. 9, Poughkeepsie

President's Words
I hope everyone that attended enjoyed our meeting in April at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel.  If you were not there, then you missed some excellent food, drink and entertainment.  As you know, the SAM National President, Jann Wherry Goodsell, had come all the way from Utah to visit with several of the Assemblies in the area, ours included.  Also in attendance was Jay Gorham Second Vice President who now lives in Arizona, Clem Kinnicutt Chairman of the Life Membership Committee, and Clem's wife Jean Kinnicutt, Chairperson for the Awards Committee.  We started the evening off by enjoying the many food choices that the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel had to offer.  Then the Club presented a plaque to Jann for honorary lifetime membership to Al Baker Assembly #35.  We then presented similar honorary memberships to our other 3 guests, all were well received.  The plaque and all awards presented were made by one of our own members Marty Steinberg.  Thank you Marty, you did an excellent job with each award.  After Jann and Clem spoke briefly about some SAM National business, we were treated to some superior close-up.  The two performers were our own Peter Walker and Past National President Craig Dickson.  Both gentlemen gave excellent performances, for which I can't thank them enough.  After the performances we all celebrated Dr. Lew Neporent's birthday, he was 39 (again).  Thanks to Steve Johnson for picking out Doc's cake...it was delicious.  All in all, I think the evening was a big success and I want to thank all that did attend.

Frank Monaco

ELECTIONS
Elections of assembly officers will be held at the September meeting.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Hello everyone, and welcome back AGAIN! I apologize for the last minute cancellation in September, but under the circumstances I felt it was best. I tried to call as many people as possible, and I also had it broadcast on several radio stations.  I am sorry if people we not informed in time, but we did the best we could.  I hope October will be a better month for us  all!

As you may know this month's lecture is by Silly Billy a.k.a. David Kaye.  I have to thank Peter White for getting David to lecture for us, he called in yet another personal favor for the club....Thanks Pete! This month's lecture should be great especially if you do family magic or kid shows which is David's trademark so to speak.  The lecture will be filled with David's perspective on the above as well as any direct questions from the club, I'm sure he would be happy to answer. David will undoubtedly show us his routines for some of the items we all own and don't use, as well as routines for his own line of products.  David is a seasoned pro who has worked for people with high notoriety such as Michael J. Fox.  I am sure we will all in enjoy David's perspective on Family Magic at it's best.

Also, please spread the word to other magicians in the area that may not be members of our club, but that may want to see Silly Billy lecture. (See details below)
I hope to see everyone there on October 9th...................
Frank Monaco

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Hi Everyone,
Well if you missed the October meeting, you missed a very special one. To start off, I welcomed everyone back as this was the 1st official meeting since the summer break. Secondly, one of our most beloved and most respected members, Ed Fitchett, received an award for 60 years as a SAM member.  The award was presented by George Schindler, Past National President, from Parent Assembly Number 1 in New York City.  I want to congratulate Ed again for receiving this award and thank him for being one of the guiding forces in the club for all these years.  Ed accepted the award with great humility for such an accomplishment, and then gave us a brief glimpse of what it was like "back then."

Our Lecturer for the evening was David Kaye a.k.a. Silly Billy. What a great lecture! David did us a special favor because he never does magic clubs, only conventions. Thanks to Peter White for getting David to lecture at our club. If you do family audience magic or children's shows, this was the lecture for you. David talked about everything from theory to the actual effects he does in his own show. As a children's performer myself, I really enjoyed his break down of the different age groups and what to do for each. All in all, this evening was a fun filled and very special night.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday Nov. 9th at Denny's Restaurant on Route 9 here in Poughkeepsie. PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGED DAY AND MEETING PLACE.  There is a back room at Denny's which will hold about 40 people comfortably. Just walk into Denny's main entrance and continue straight back.  The seating is limited so after 40 people the doors will be closed and the room will not be open to additional people....please get there on time. The lecturer for this night will be Dan Harlan, inventor of such effects as Cardtoon and Hover Card just to name a few. Dan is a very accomplished magician and has a lot to show us. I am sure he will bring his books, videos and effects to sell afterwards so come prepared. Remember Friday, November 9th at Denny's on Rt. 9 here in Poughkeepsie at 7:30 PM. Just for the curious folks, the reason we are meeting at Denny's is we could not get Central Hudson for that Friday. Thanks to Steve Johnson for finding us this alternate location. Ok, Hope to see you there!

Frank Monaco

SAM #35 Newsletter
Tuesday December 11th, 2001

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Hi Everyone,
This month I come to you with some very sad news.  One of our former members and one of our good friends has passed away recently, John Treyz.   John was an amazing individual to talk with, as well as a very good magician in his own right. I remember several times when he fooled yours truly, and fooled me badly.  We will be holding a broken wand ceremony for John at our next meeting, so please plan on attending to pay your respects.  I am sure John will be greatly missed by his friends and family alike.

If you missed last month's lecture, you missed one of the best ones we have had in a while. Dan Harlan gave an excellent lecture, as well as a very entertaining performance of his material. He was everything you want in a lecture, funny, informative, and thought provoking. Dan brought with him many of the ingenious effects he sells, as well as his videos and DVDs.

Everyone that attended had a great time, and I received a lot of positive feedback about the lecture. If you ever get a chance to catch one of Dan's lectures, by all means do so.....it is time well spent.

This month's meeting will be held at Central Hudson at our usual time of 7:30 PM. Ed Fitchett will hosting our second video night, which promises to be a good one again this year. You will get a chance to see some rarely viewed footage of magicians from the past, as well as some magicians from the present. I know Ed and Steve have be busy gathering footage for this night, so let's show our support and have a great turnout. We will probably have Popcorn and Soda like we did last time. Also, if you have some footage that you would like the club to see please contact Ed Fitchett before the meeting at 454-1614. Thanks again Ed for running this night and ironing out all the details. Also, thanks to Steve Johnson as well, for helping put some of the footage together for this night.

I also want to thank Roger Lewin for doing an excellent job as our Treasurer. Roger has brought the position of treasurer to a new level, by letting us know where every penny of the clubs money is coming from and going to. I can always count on Roger also, to have the check ready for any of the expenses our club incurs before or after our meetings. Thanks again Roger........... Excellent Job!!!

Well, that's about it for this month hope to see everyone on Tuesday December 11th for our next meeting...

Frank Monaco

SAD NEWS
We are sad to report the passing of John Treyz on Tuesday, November 20th after a long battle with cancer.  He had turned 73 just a week earlier.  John was known throughout the magic fraternity and added character to many of the magic events he attended.  He is survived by a sister Mary and a brother Paul.

Past Assembly President Jack Shea reflects:  "Johnny was a man who knew magic inside and out and spent many hours and even days looking to find a method of doing an effect without the standard gaffs and in many cases eliminated the 'trickery' making HIS magic an amazement or a wonder that was 'off-the-cuff' and done without the usual trappings of a magic trick. Johnny and I spent hours on the phone discussing many aspects and treatments used in the more commercial effects and he would mull these over and call at a later date with something incredibly amazing and when we got together and he showed me these things they were astounding in their simplicity and totally 'fooling' as the method would be unnoticed and diabolical in execution. He was a kind and gentle man without pretense and would go way out of his way to help a friend or someone in need. I was a better person for knowing him. I'll miss him."

A broken wand ceremony is planned for the December meeting.  John Treyz will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
