Society of American Magicians
Al Baker Assembly #35
January, 2007
Message From the
President
Dear Compeers,
As I compose this we are three days into the New
Year of 2007 and only 56 hours from Cavalcade of
Magic show time on Friday. The year that was 2006
is a memory, all that happened all that we
experienced lives only in our minds. Interesting that
magic is much the same way, the experience is a
memory that exists for the individual after the trick is
over. There is some food for thought.
Since our next official meeting will not take place
until February, I’d like to take this opportunity to
thank the members and officers of the club for their
enthusiastic support for the club and the projects we
have embarked upon. I want to especially thank Joel
Zaritsky and John Shaw both of who, in addition to
being performers, have done some heavy duty
promotion for Cavalcade and as always to Derrin
Berger and my “consigliore" Frank Monaco for
helping me keep it all together. A special thanks to
Daryl Bielsky and John Gould for also helping with
planning and promotion and I’m certain there will be
many more thanks due after the show with all of the
performers, stage and technical crew. I’m looking
forward to a fun and profitable show for out Magic
Camp Scholarship.
We have had great participation and the lectures have
given us a diverse look into magic knowledge and
some of the characters who live in the world of
entertainment. It was, at least in my memory, fun,
entertaining, and informative.
I personally have been quite busy and have found an
occasional phone call or contact slipping through the
cracks, for those instances I apologize, but I hope the
memory of my presidency with Al Baker Assembly
35 will be remembered as a positive time for our
club.
Best wishes for healthy, happy and prosperous New
Year to everyone in Al Baker Assembly 35!
Magically,
Carlo DeBlasio
A note from the
Secretary
Bad news for some, good news for some others, but
you'll notice this newsletter is particularly shorter
than the previous few months. Many of us having
been working very hard on the Cavalcade show,
which meant this month's articles, calendar entries,
events, etc. had to be sacrificed. But fear not! They'll
be back before you know it. So in short... Cavalcade
of Magic 2 IS this month's club news!

Al Baker Assembly #35
January, 2007
Last Month
Business first:
The business meeting was brief.
More reminders about the upcoming shows and
posters (8.5x11 and 11x17) were made available to
members to help promote the event.
Our December meeting featured guest lecturer Harley
Newman. Harley is an expert in the field of escapes
and dedicated the evening to not only showing us
some of the basic techniques of escapes, but also
imparted some priceless knowledge about the
theatrical aspect of performing escape magic. The
meeting was a very hands-on type of experience as
Harley even handed out ropes to the members and
had each of us tied up. On a personal note, your
illustrious secretary had the honor of being paired up
with Ed Fitchett, who not only managed to keep me
occupied trying to free my wrists from the ropes
(where he learned how to do that so well I don't
know), but also managed to escape with tremendous
ease. After I tied him up, he said (and I quote), “Boy,
it's like you didn't even tie these at all" and then
slipped the ropes off without breaking a sweat.
Thanks Ed!
